Homemade Chicken Food

Writer's picture: KathrynKathryn

It is totally possible to make chicken food. But I wasn't sure that this was something that could be done on a small scale in a home kitchen. But it totally can. This does require a meat grinder of some sort, but many of the ingredients are pretty simple.

Feeding homemade chicken food to chickens

Makes: a lot

Prep time: 20 minutes

Total time: 1 hours

Ingredients:

  • greens

  • chicken food

  • whole eggs (including shell)

  • water

Instructions:

  1. Gather some greens your chickens like. Dandelions, wilted lettuce, celery tops, etc. Chop them relatively finely to go through the meat grinder easier.

  2. In a large bowl, add the chopped greens, chicken food (or nutrients), some eggs as a binder, and enough water to make the chicken food mushy but able to hold together.

  3. Once everything is well mixed, squeeze a handful together and see if it holds together. It should hold with minimal drops of water. If it is too crumbly, add water. If it is too wet, add more binder.

  4. Pass everything through the grinder to create medium pellets. Gently place the pellets on a dehydrator tray and dehydrate.

Tips and Notes:

  • Chicken food contains vital nutrients and minerals. If this is meant to be the only food you give your chickens, make sure to add in a nutrient blend.

  • Chicken food helps act as a binder, corn meal, masa, ground grains, any binder.

  • Add in the eggs and the shells, the eggs also act as a binder.
